Encadernação com lombada e cantos em pele, com nervos e ferros a ouro. Folha de rosto em caracteres góticos e redondos enquadrada por elementos decorativos arquitectónicos, com o escudo das armas de Portugal ao alto sobre uma platibanda, com figuras e esferas armilares nas colunas e um escudo de armas no embasamento. Impressão em caracteres redondos no texto e caracteres góticos nos títulos de capítulos e notas marginais, ornamentada com iniciais decoradas e camarões a anteceder ou enquadrar os títulos. Exemplar com a folha de rosto e a última folha espelhadas, com manchas no centro das folhas preliminares, no pé e nos cantos inferiores das folhas, com mancha à cabeça das paginas 101 ao fim, com especial incidência de 193 a 210, 263 a 378 e nas quatro últimas folhas do índice, em que atinge a mancha tipográfica de forma grave na última folha com perda de texto até à linha número 15. As folhas preliminares incluem o índice dos capítulos no verso da folha de rosto, dedicatória ao rei D. João III, [Prólogo] dirigido aos antigos alunos que assistiram às suas aulas em Salamanca, dedicatória ao Bispo de Roncesvales e as erratas. As folhas finais incluem o índice, uma nota ao leitor sobre o índice e o cólofon. Raríssima edição quinhentista portuguesa, que foi a primeira obra publicada em Portugal pelo seu autor e a primeira obra impressa por estes tipógrafos na cidade de Coimbra. É um comentário aos livros quinto, sexto e sétimo das distinções de Graciano monge Camaldulense célebre professor de direito canónico do século XII, em Bolonha, que é considerado o fundador da jurisprudência canónica. Martin de Azpicuelta Navarro (Barásoin, Navarra 1492 - Roma 1586) bacharel em teologia pela Universidade de Alcalá de Henares, doutor em direito civil e canónico pela Universidade de Toulouse, onde foi professor, assim como na Universidade de Cahors. Depois de uma breve passagem pela Ordem de Santo Agostinho, no Mosteiro de Cónegos Regulares de Roncesvales, foi professor em Salamanca e posteriormente a convite de D. João III tornou-se professor catedrático da Universidade de Coimbra, de 1538 a 1555, onde o seu ensino influenciou os primeiros jesuítas. Influenciou também o desenvolvimento da teologia moral em Portugal tendo revisto e corrigido o texto da célebre obra Manual de Confessores e Penitentes de Frei Rodrigo do Porto publicada em 1549. Title page in Gothic and round characters framed by architectural decorative elements, with the coat-of-arms of Portugal at the top on a platband, with armillary figures and spheres on the columns and a coat-of-arms on the embasement. Printed in round characters in the text and Gothic characters in the chapter titles and marginal notes, ornamented with decorated initials and pilcrows preceding or framing the titles. Copy with mounted title page and last leaf, stained at the centre of the preliminary leaves, at the foot and lower corners of the leaves, and the head of pages 101 to the end, with particular incidence from 193 to 210, 263 to 378 and on the last four leaves of the index, where it hits the text severely on the last leaf with loss of text on line number 15. The preliminary leaves include the index of the chapters on the verso of the title page, dedication to King John III, [Prologue] addressed to the former students who attended his classes in Salamanca, dedication to the Bishop of Roncesvales and the errata. The final leaves include the index, a note to the reader on the index and the colophon. Rare fifteenth-century Portuguese edition, which was the first work published in Portugal by its author and the first work printed by these printers in the city of Coimbra. It is a commentary on the fifth, sixth and seventh books of the distinctions of Gratian the Camaldulan monk, a celebrated 12th-century professor of canon law in Bologna, who is considered the founder of canon jurisprudence. He also influenced the development of moral theology in Portugal having revised and corrected the text of the celebrated work Manual de Confessores e Penitentes by Friar Rodrigo do Porto published in 1549.
